Historical preservation professionals, Xenia Community Schools staff and City of Xenia representatives recently toured Central Office as part of their year-long process to identify adaptive uses for the building.
A team of business leaders, City of Xenia officials, community leaders, school officials, former students and teachers, as well as historical preservation experts have been meeting since last year to identify the top four possible uses for the facility. A community center, residential complex, arts center or mixed use facility were finalized as the top four options.
The school district's Central Office is planning to move in the future to an existing elementary school building as part of the Ohio School Facility Commission project to build five new schools.
Located at 578 E. Market St., the Central Office houses the administrative offices for Xenia Community Schools and was originally East High School during a time when the City of Xenia was still segregated.
The building was constructed in 1923 and sits on one acre.
The building also housed an alternative school program known as The Center for Educational Programming, which opened in 1966 and closed in 1971. The building has since served as the Central Office for the district.
