Spencer Lockwood, a 2015 Xenia High School graduate, is Freddie Falcon, one of Bowling Green State University's mascots, this school year. Before it was revealed toward the end of the basketball season in February, Spencer had to keep his identity as Freddie Falcon a secret. It was a challenge when his friends always asked where he was and why he was so busy. Spencer has attended hundreds of athletic, campus, and community events as Freddie.
He applied to become Freddie Falcon to give back to the BGSU community. While at BGSU, Spencer said he has been given many leadership opportunities, lifelong friendships, and an institution to call home.
"I love everything about BGSU and there is no better way to embrace the spirit of the university than to be the main ambassador of the college," he said.
Spencer is attending BGSU to pursue a major in Applied Health Science. He will graduate in 2019 and plans to move from BGSU to a Physicians Assistant program in Ohio.
While at Xenia High School, Spencer had several teachers who consistently guided and mentored him: Bill Richey, Rebecca Gagliano, and Molly Wavra. They led him to determine that he wanted to pursue a profession in the STEM field.
"Without the amazing teachers at Xenia High School that always go the extra mile, I would have never been able to succeed in my high school career and go far in my college journey," he said.
Spencer was part of the Men's Soccer team for four years while at XHS and was Captain and one of the kickers for the football team his senior year. He was also a member of Xenia Vocal Ensemble, Student Council, and Chemistry Club.
"Being a part of those groups were the most precious moments of my time at Xenia High School. The leadership training I received broke my shell and gave me the confidence I lacked in several areas," he said.
Spencer's advice for Xenia students: "If you are active and take every opportunity that comes your way, while giving your 100 percent, Xenia High School will never let you down, and will leave an impact on your life."
Spencer is in this BGSU-produced video about what it was like to represent the college as a mascot:
