REDISTRICTING
Students, parents, teachers and other staff are looking forward to getting settled into the five new elementary schools. The construction project manager, Jim Froehlich of the Scaparotti Construction Group, has indicated that a completion date for the entire venture can be estimated in December, 2012.
As of now, the redistricting (assigning students to their new home school) is planned for 2013-2014. The map and street guide that was previously posted will be reviewed in the near future to check for accuracy because a few errors with the street guide were discovered. There are many factors which influence the ability of the district to effectively place students in home schools.
- The new buildings are designed to house 450 students (K-5). Enrollment must be planned around the 450 student registration.
- The Xenia School district, the city of Xenia and all of the townships, are not easily divided into five visible segments.
- The old buildings do not necessarily house 450 students comfortably.
- The RFP’s (and the possible XESP response to the RFP’s) will affect redistricting decisions. The persons in charge of transportation will need to have significant involvement in planning and implementing the redistricting of students.
- There is an obvious desire to “get it right.” Redistricting decisions are tough decisions, and should not be taken lightly or hastily.
Please note that there will be a time for parents and families to have input on the redistricting at structured public meetings.
Please keep these items in mind:
- There will NOT be redistricting for the upcoming school year 2012-2013. The status of 5th grade at Simon Kenton is unknown. The Simon Kenton enrollment (2011-2012) is over 450. The projected enrollment for Simon Kenton (2012-2013) is over 450. Buildings must be at 450 or below in order for the effective, mid-year transition to the new buildings. The new buildings are built to serve 450 students. Therefore, a determination will need to be made for students entering 5th grade at Simon Kenton. A possibility for the placement of these students is Central Middle School. All options will be explored.
- Students start at the same school for 2012-2013 as they did for this year. Open enrollment families will use the same procedure as this year starting on March 27, 2012.
