Xenia FFA Students Raise Funds for Local Charities

Greene County FFA members from Xenia High school recently
hosted the third annual “Cardboard City” in an effort to raise
awareness for local individuals who are less fortunate.
Students challenged themselves to sleep overnight in cardboard
boxes at the Greene County Fairgrounds.
Nearly 50 students participated in temperatures below forty
degrees that evening.
In the weeks leading up to the event, students spent time
planning and organizing the project and spoke with
representative of local charities to discover their needs and in
order to better understand their cause.
“My seniors really took charge and did an outstanding job
planning this event,” said Matt Smith, the chapter advisor.
In order to participate, students were required to give twenty
to twenty-five dollars worth of donations to local charities
that included Greene Inc., the American Red Cross and the Family
Violence Prevention Center.
Nearly one thousand dollars were donated to these
organizations. While at the event, students were not allowed to
eat or bring personal belongings.
When asked about the event, Steve Kelleher, a student in the
organization said, “This experience has really opened my eyes
and helped me realize that there are people out there who don’t
share the benefits that we have every night in our homes.”
